When most people think about revenue, they picture the performers: sales on stage with the spotlight, marketing running the hype machine, finance giving the final thumbs‑up from the balcony.
Revenue Operations is… none of those. We’re the people behind the scenes making sure the lights turn on, the mics work, and nobody falls through a trapdoor during the big finale.
Officially, RevOps is the function that aligns people, process, and data across sales, marketing, finance, and customer success so everyone is working from the same playbook. Unofficially, we’re the ones quietly asking, “Are we sure this number is real?” before it goes on a slide.
Here’s what that looks like in real life:
- Sales wants to know which deals are actually going to close this month.
- Marketing wants to prove their campaigns are driving more than “leads in a spreadsheet.”
- Finance wants a forecast that doesn’t change personalities three times a week.
RevOps is the layer in the middle that connects all of that—cleaning the data, untangling the tech stack, and building workflows so everyone is looking at the same truth at the same time. Think less “mysterious back office,” more “stage manager with a headset making sure the right people are in the right place with the right information.”
When it’s working, nobody really notices Revenue Operations. The dashboards match the bank account. The handoffs between teams feel smooth instead of like a game of telephone. And big decisions get made with fewer “wait, where did that number come from?”
When it’s not working, you feel it everywhere: misaligned goals, duplicate work, conflicting reports, and a tech stack that looks like a prop closet after opening night. That’s usually when somebody says, “We should probably get Ops involved…
Personally, I like living backstage. I enjoy taking what feels messy on the inside—AR aging, pricing changes, CRM chaos—and turning it into systems and reports the “performers” can actually trust. If you’re curious how that plays out in specific projects, I’ve shared a few short case studies here: my portfolio/case studies page.
